In 2009, Ontario government launched the microFIT program to encouraged homeowners install solar panels on their homes. Under the program Ontario homeowners are entitled to one microFIT contract which allows them to sell electricity back to grid at premium rates once they have installed at solar system at their roof. This contract is valid for 20 years and the size of the system cannot exceed 10 kw – that is 40 panels in total if each panel is 250 watt.

Ontario Government Solar Program

Solar system is connected to the local grid so the electricity generated from it could be fed directly to the grid. Under microFIT, all electricity is sold back to the grid at premium rates to give home owners the best rate of return on their investment. A solar system is installed on a house rooftop. Electricity is generated during using Sun rays and all the electricity is sold back to the grid at premium rates under a 20 year contact. See diagram above.

Home Solar Cost

As of summer 2017, a microFIT system would typically cost anywhere between $20,000 to $30,000. With a monthly payment of between $200-$300, system will pay itself off in about 7 years and sometimes even less.
